DescriptionThe range takes its name from the Madison River, named by Capt. Meriwether Lewis and Capt. William Clark for secretary of state and future president James Madison. The Madison is one of the largest mountain ranges in the state, extending from Yellowstone National Park to south of Bozeman. It contains several peaks over 10,000 feet, including Blaze Mountain, Lone Mountain, the Sphinx, and the highest, 11,297-foot Hilgard Peak. Portions of the range are in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness.Personal NamesLewis, MeriwetherClark, WilliamMadison, JamesOther Name(s)Madison RangeContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1]
