DescriptionThis coulee is named for John Manternach, who homesteaded nearby about 1902. The first year, Manternach sowed 20 acres of oats, and during the hard winter of 1906–07 the family lost more than 300 of their 335 cattle. During the next 2 decades, other members of the Manternach family homesteaded in this vicinity on the Poplar River.
