DescriptionHuntley was first established in 1877 as a Gilmer and Salisbury Company stage station, store, ferry, and post office run by Omar Hoskins and Thomas McGirl. Since both Gilmer and Salisbury had previously worked for Silas S. Huntley’s stage line, it was logical to name the station for him. In 1881, Huntley became a Northern Pacific Railroad station. In 1907, the Huntley Irrigation Project began diverting water from the Yellowstone River just upriver of Huntley, making possible sugar beet crops and, ultimately, a sugar beet refinery in Billings.Personal NamesHoskins, OmarMcGirl, ThomasHuntley, Silas S.Contributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation3019 ft.
