DescriptionThe construction of the Rocky Fork & Cooke City Railway in 1892 made the spot that would become Joliet a shipping point for agricultural products. Although locals began developing the site as early as 1893, it was not until 1899 that the Joliet Townsite and Improvement Company purchased the 32 acres that became the town. Named for Joliet, Illinois, in 1895 the town unsuccessfully vied with Red Lodge to become the county seat of newly created Carbon County. Properties listed in the National Register include the Joliet Bridge over Rock Creek, Joliet High School, the Southern Hotel, and the Joliet Fire Hall.Contributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation3736 ft.CountyCarbon County
