DescriptionMike Klein was a native of Bohemia who came to Montana in 1879 to work for the Montana Cattle Company. In 1902, Klein established his own ranch in the Bull Mountains, south of the town of Roundup. Employees of the Milwaukee Road discovered coal on Klein’s property in 1909. By 1918, the town had 2 general stores and 3 saloons that served the coal miners living there. Mike Klein sold the mine to the railroad’s subsidiary, the Monarch Coal Company, which developed Republic Mine No. 2 to provide fuel for locomotives. When the railroad converted to diesel, the demand for coal declined, and the town of Klein was essentially abandoned.
