DescriptionThe Powder River, after which the Little Powder River is named, derives from the Lakota word yela, which means “powdery,” a reference to the fine silt found in the river. The Little Powder River Valley in southeastern Montana attracted Clinton Graham and, later, S. F. Biddle to the area in the late 1880s. These ranchers eventually established the Cross Ranch, and the area has continued to have a ranching economy.Personal NamesGraham, ClintonBiddle, S.F.Contributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1]
