DescriptionEast Butte is the name given collectively to 3 peaks—Mount Brown, Mount Royal, and East Butte—in the Sweet Grass Hills. The Isaac I. Stevens railroad survey mapped the area as the Trois Buttes (Three Buttes) in the early 1850s. East Butte was the site of a gold discovery by Alfred Bragg about 1884. The Great Northern Railway also acquired claims in the area around 1896, but very little gold was ever actually mined. The Blackfeet, Chippewa-Cree, and Gros Ventre tribes consider the area sacred and oppose any future mining in the Sweet Grass Hills. The tribes have lobbied to make the Sweet Grass Hills a world heritage site.
