The painting shows a herd of bison on snow-covered plains, while a hunter lies on a hill in the foreground at right, aiming with his rifle at the bison. The hunter is wearing a cartridge belt and several sheathed knives at his waist. Another cartridge belt is stretched out on the ground beside him. Numerous dead bison lie on the ground. Rocks protrude from the snow around the hunter. Three rivers or gullies converge right of center. The artist's signature appears at the lower right: "J.H.
