Elizabeth and Wilbur Wood

DescriptionElizabeth and Wilbur Wood are AERO founders from Roundup, MT. In this interview, they share the origin stories of Northern Plains Resource Council and, out of that, AERO and the New Western Energy Show. NPRC came together as an alliance of farmers, ranchers and conservationists fighting proposed coal mining in the Bull Mountains and threatened the health of their land. The folks who formed AERO wanted to identify and promote renewable energy as a viable alternative to fossil fuel for Montana, a novel idea in the 1970’s. A Roundup native and accomplished writer/poet, Wilbur was grounded in Montana values of land stewardship and conservation. In San Francisco, where he went to study, he met Elizabeth. When they returned to Roundup together, they brought with them a sensibility of urban activism and an appreciation for the power of art and street theater to stimulate engagement and change at the community level. The hugely successful theatrical New Western Energy Show. was their brainchild. The Show traveled the state for nine years, even reaching into Canada and California, educating communities and schools on the viability of renewable, non-polluting alternatives to fossil fuels and paving the way for the Montana renewable energy resources we enjoy today.
