DescriptionJonda Crosby is a former Program Manager and Executive Director of AERO, joining the organization as a contractor in 1996 and retiring from the ED position in 2011. She directed AERO through some of its most impactful years of sustainable agriculture programming, including the Montana Food System Initiative, Farm Improvement Clubs, and supporting development of AERO’s Abundant Montana Directory and the Grow MT coalition. In this far-ranging interview, Jonda describes AERO’s sustainable agriculture programming history, thoughtfully reflecting on the skills and values that support AERO’s effectiveness. Here are some of Jonda’s reflections on AERO’s success: - AERO has solutions-oriented education programs. - AERO has this community of people, really bright, really forward-thinking. And in the midst of that, of course, our idea as an organization is also not only are we setting policy trying to address and encourage certain kinds of research to help this group, but also to have some education element so that it could be shared more widely; we also are developing leaders. - Jane Kyle once told me: AERO isn’t a building, a budget or staff. AERO is people. If the office, staff and funding go away, there is always AERO. - People's lives changed and they were validated for their ideas. It changed families. It changed communities. And that is what AERO was designed for. - When I think of AERO as an entity, what is lasting and more fascinating is that it is a very welcoming community….It is a group of people who are literally sort of like geniuses about a particular system's thinking process. ...[T]hey're big risk takers and they're very forthright about their thinking.
