Russ Salisbury and Elsie Tuss

DescriptionRuss Salisbury and Elsie Tuss, husband and wife and long-time dancing partners, were early AERO members; Russ from the very first days of AERO’s formation. Elsie, a reformed nun, had a strong community organizing energy and was a key player in capturing and organizing the Ag Task Force's ideas and plans for years. Farming land that had been in his family since 1890, Russ says, “I made a commitment to myself to do what I thought was best for the land in my lifetime.” That he did, practicing organic farming methods that built soil health and continually improved the land he stewarded. Eminently practical and generous to a fault, Russ gave generously of his time, energy, and support to both the AERO organization and the AERO community. In the words of fellow “AERO-naut” and friend, David Oien of Timeless Seeds, “Russ always gave generously to individuals and organizations he thought were making a difference. If someone needed a piece of equipment and Russ had it, you couldn’t buy it from him , but he’d be happy to give it to you! Russ was the moral compass of AERO. He was always asking: ‘Are we making a difference in our own communities to people like us?’” Here’s why Russ thought AERO was special: “You can’t farm from a book….[the AERO community is] the most productive group of people I’ve ever been associated with. They were actually doing - not just sitting around talking. They were actually doing it.” “[AERO’s] not afraid to be out on the edge. And it's got thinking people in it that aren't afraid, didn't go hide. And you've got to be a thinking person to do that. There's not very many of us have the ability.
