Crazy Quilt with Burgundy Border

DescriptionQuilt Layout: Crazy Quilt Block Size: varies, 17-17.75” squares Construction techniques/Colors and patterns: Silk and velvet quilt top. Three blocks wide by four blocks long. The pieces that make up the blocks were hand pieced or appliquéd and embroidered by hand. The pieces are predominantly made of solid colors (red/burgundy, orange, pink, yellow, gold, green, blue, violet, black, grey, brown, and white/ivory/cream). There are also some patterned pieces in many colors (including stripes, grids, florals, paisley, gingham, meander, checkerboard, polka dots, and geometric patterns). There are several floral one color cut/voided velvets. The quilt is heavily embroidered. Commemorative/fraternal/campaign ribbons (listed below) were added and then embroidered. The initials “J A” are in the center. “B M” and “M T” are embroidered in the bottom center. All of the initials are decorated with embroidered flowers. “1891” is embroidered below the two sets of initials in the bottom center. Many embroidery stitches with complex variations and combination stitches were used to embellish the pieces and blocks including blanket, cretan, cross, feather, fern leaf, fly, French knot, herringbone, stem, and straight. The predominant embroidery thread colors are shades of white, ivory, and yellow. Red, pink, and orange were also used. There are also several colorful embroidered images, including a horse shoe embroidered with “GOOD LUCK” in the center. Other examples: hat, flowers, butterflies, people, fruit, cup, star, owls, and bird. Some of the embroidery was created with chenille rather than thread. The quilt back is two machine-stitched mustard yellow panels. A yellow cretan stitch is embroidered along the seam of the two panels. The quilt is not quilted and there is no batting. Borders: About 3.25-3.5” single straight, pieced, burgundy velvet borders. Binding: Self-binding with front and back folded together, tucked in, and hand-stitched., Ribbons: Two blue candidate ribbons: (1) “GALLATIN CO. Republican Club” and “Our Candidate.” with illustration of a man’s torso (2) “CARTER FOR CONGRESS” with illustration of tools and a paragraph about the protection of free trade (3)(4) Two Montana Press Association Ribbons from Bozeman, August 19, 20, 21 of 1886 (one burgundy, one blue) (5) blue “LIVINGSTON CARTER CLUB” with American flag (6) red “GRAND LODGE OF MONTANA” 1889 with illustration of all-seeing eye and three chain links (7) white “IOOF BOZEMAN BOARD OF TRADE Excursion June 19, 1890.” (8) “GRAND LODGE I. Donor letter states: "...done by Mrs. Gus (Bessie) Morton, Bozeman, Montana, a few years after the turn of the century and given to my sister, Margaret Tulloch Mashino (Mrs. L. L., Dillon, Montana): hence the initials embroidered on the coverlet "M T". The initials "J A" are for Johanna Anderson, an early day Swedish pioneer, who with her husband homesteaded a fine farm in Bridger Canyon."
