DescriptionThis dam was constructed in 1938 and is the largest dam and power plant among the 13 hydroelectric projects owned by Montana Power Company. The dam was originally named Kerr Dam, after Frank Kerr, president of the company from 1933 to 1940. The dam is taller than Niagara Falls and has more than 200,000 kW of power generating capacity. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT), which own the land on which the dam sits, received an annual rental fee from PPL Montana (who purchased Montana Power Company’s facilities in 2000). In an historic move CSKT purchased the dam from NorthWestern Energy, who had purchased it from PPL in 2015. The CSKT renamed it as Selis Ksanka Qlispe Dam, which are the names of the three tribes that comprise the confederation.Personal NamesKerr, FrankOther Name(s)Kerr DamContributing InstitutionMontana Historical Society Library and ArchivesGeolocation[1] Elevation2789 ft.CountyLake County
