Teacher Workshop

Montana History Portal Teacher Workshops April 3-4

Montana History Portal encourages teachers to participate in our biennial workshop to explore the History Portal content and create an exhibit with portal content narrating a story to be used in the classroom and to work as a standalone history lesson on our website.

2026 Workshop Details

Have you ever wanted to research a Montana or US history topic and share the details of your discovery with your students’ using images and other primary resource materials as references? Now is your chance. Spend two days - hotel, meals, and tours included at no cost - with the Montana History Portal staff learning how to create various types of digital exhibits using the content from the History Portal. Select a topic, gather the details, read, research and create an exhibit of your topic. Your exhibit will be published on the History Portal website, where you can access it, and it will be available to the public as a history lesson of its own.

The History Portal contains over 102,000 items to help tell the story of a variety of topics – US History and World History can be taught through Montana primary source materials.

As part of the 2-day workshop, you will get a tour of the new Montana Heritage Center and a historic walking tour of the Montana Capitol grounds to help inspire ideas and learn more about our state history. The workshop is worth 16 OPI credits and a $425 stipend for your finished exhibit.

An abbreviated agenda is shared below. A more detailed agenda will be provided for final participants.

Friday, April 3 – Portal tour, Exhibit review, Montana History topics discussion. Tours

Saturday, April 4 – Brainstorm and share ideas, research, and outline creation.

Register to join us April 3 and 4, 2024 at the Montana Heritage Center 225 North Roberts, Helena, Montana, 59601

*Note: All images and content used in the exhibits must be hosted in the History Portal already. If you have specific topics in mind, we suggest doing some research ahead of time to determine if there is enough content to support your topic of choice.
